This course describes how to do a Positive-Neutral Timeline to assist your clients in strengthening internal resources they client has that may not be accessible.
Before addressing traumatic material a client has to have a certain amount of internal resource to be able to handle the disturbing material. This is something we learned in EMDR therapy in the early days. Clients who were not properly assessed for readiness, and properly prepared became unstable, overwhelmed, often dissociated.
Because my early work in the field was in juvenile rehab, social services, mental health and locked psychiatric settings, I was very familiar with how people’s background affects their present circumstances. After my body-centered psychotherapy trainings and EMDR training I realized assessing and preparing my clients for trauma resolution work required them having some level of a core sense of self, knowing what is right for them, who they are vs how they have been conditioned to be.
This is one activity that can give them a more stable platform to do the work from. It tends to weave together positive and/or neutral experiences they have internally that they may have trouble accessing.
For EMDR practitioners, this is a tools for resourcing in Phase 2. For other practitioners it is a tool to use before you address traumatic material.
This will help you see what kind of core stability they have, or do not. It will strengthen adaptive memory networks building more core stability.
